Searching For Umn Off Campus Housing

By Sandra Moore

When a student is accepted by a university many will need to leave home and find some suitable living accommodation. A large number of universities have student block accommodation on site but places are limited and they tend to fill up quickly. If you are looking for umn off campus housing there are some important things to think about and some care is needed before you make any decisions.

The first thing to do is calculate your budget to work out whether the accommodation is going to be affordable. A one bedroom flat will cost around 600 bucks per month which may include some appliances and simple furniture. A three bedroom house will cost around 1500 dollars but it is worth noting that electricity, gas and water will charged separately.

A sensible place to search for a place to live is at your university. Most will have notice boards displaying adverts for properties that are available for students to rent. It can be worth chatting with teachers, friends and fellow students to see if they have any advice or help.

It is often a struggle for new students, away from home for the first time, to budget their money and many will take on jobs to pay their bills. A good solution to bring down your monthly costs is to rent a larger property and share with others. This is a good option for many as it ensures that all rental costs and utility bills are split between the tenants.

If you decide take rental accommodation is it very important to think about what household items you are going to need. Many properties are unfurnished and you will need to purchase items to make it homely. Another thing to consider is that along with the first months rent payment, agents will require a deposit against damages, which is refunded at the end of the tenancy if the property in good order.

A large number of student housing villages will have other amenities to benefit their paying tenants. Study areas, libraries and swimming pools are often made available and free internet access is also included. Extra facilities may include small supermarkets, diners and bars and these make living on the complex more convenient.

Another plus point with many housing sites is the location and proximity to the university. Many sites are within walking distance and this takes away the need to pay money for transport. Some of the larger universities may provide a shuttle bus to parts of town and this is worth looking into.

A very important thing to think about is the length of the tenancy that is available and offered by your agent. Most will offer a six month to one year lease but there may be some flexibility depending on the letting companies policy. If you are going to be studying at the university for a few years then some of the long term tenancies are worth looking at as a discount is often available if you paying one years rent in advance in one lump sum.
